Cinema in Kingston

With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund we have teamed up with Kingston Heritage Service on a new project to explore the rich history of the Royal Borough's cinemas.

Working with volunteers who have been trained in oral history, interviewing techniques and sound recording, 15 interviews with projectionists, usherettes, house managers, cinema-goers and local historians have been filmed.

These have been used to create a film to make the project easily accessible to all, while the full interviews and photographic and other material collected will be deposited with the Kingston Heritage Service. The film and interviews are housed on this site for everyone to access.

Do you have memories of Kingston’s cinemas you would like to share?

The team at Kingston Heritage Service are looking for more people who can come and share their memories. These will be added to this important and growing archive held at the History Centre in Kingston. So whether you are a cinemagoer or an ex-worker, please do get in touch via

Cinema in Kingston from digital:works on Vimeo.

You can also watch the film in Full HD on YouTube.
